SUMMARY:Winter Professional Learning Day
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n \nMTASA Winter Professional Learning Day 2025 \nREGISTRATIONS OPEN FROM 12.30PM ON THE DAY \nThe Mystery of the Musical Mind — keynote presentation by Amanda Handel\nThe Mystery of the Musical Mind explores the interplay of the conscious and subconscious minds in our neurology\, showing how we can deliberately utilise their distinguishing features for highly effective learning and rewarding performance. Providing anecdotes from her studio\, Amanda emphasises the importance of crafting language wisely to penetrate the subconscious mind with clear intention. Delving into the power and impact of metaphor\, she shows how lasting emotional and physiological change can be created — transforming unhelpful habits and impediments. Amanda highlights how the body’s natural physiological response mechanisms can be maximised through the imagination\, and teachers will discover ways to positively influence their students’ subconscious minds for authentic\, expressive and confident music making. She touches on why our neurology needs sharpened awareness during repetitive practise for gaining neurological security. \nMasterclass and Discussion — with Amanda Handel\nBased on Amanda’s compositions from the AMEB syllabus: Stalactite\, Dream Boat Blues\, and The Seduction of Andalusia. \nSAMii — Launch of Collaborative Partnership with MTASA\, presented by Pete Barter\nMore info: https://www.samii.au/about \nWizard Tone Studios — Presentation and Conversation with Sam Lench\nMore info: https://www.wizardtonestudios.com/ \nPlus a word from our Major Sponsor: Credit Union SA \nKeynote Presenter Bio: Amanda Handel \nAmanda is an active composer\, pianist\, singer and teacher based in the Blue Mountains with thriving teaching practices in Katoomba and the Penrith Conservatorium. She has also lectured in harmony\, analysis and composition at Western Sydney University\, where she graduated with a compositional research Masters’ degree in 2004. \nPublished by Wirripang\, her compositions represent a wide range of diverse and eclectic influences. She has composed numerous pieces for piano\, a number of chamber works in various combinations — including string orchestra — as well as many solo works for classical guitar and woodwind instruments. Some of these appear in AMEB publications and syllabi. Amanda has written many works commissioned by various performers and arts organisations for festivals and recordings. She has released two original piano-based CDs: Ghosts & Angels and Gardens of Stone\, collaborating with an electronic artist and a didjeridu player respectively. Both albums received excellent SMH reviews and extensive ABC radio airplay. \nHer music has been described as “hauntingly beautiful\, creative\, cohesive and compositionally advanced\,” “engaging and evocative\, seductive with a Spanish tinge\, and a lot of grit.” \nBeginning with classical piano\, Amanda’s knowledge and experience now extends into other world genres. As a vocalist\, she led Canto Latino Quartet performing a repertoire of traditional Argentinean tango and Latin music for over ten years. \nHaving graduated with her Diploma in Hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)\, her musical profile now has new dimensions of expertise — including certification as a BodyMinded™ (Alexander Technique) practitioner. These fascinating new fields of knowledge have become the cornerstone underpinning her musical life. \nCurrently Amanda is adapting these powerful tools and techniques to provide specialised studio teaching and intensive training workshops for musicians. Her vision incorporates writing a book elaborating on how to deliberately engage and optimise the subconscious mind in learning and performing. \nPlease visit\nhttps://www.amandahandel.com\nhttps://www.youtube.com/@amandahandelmusic/videos

SUMMARY:Dr Poom Prommachart webinar: Preparing Your Students for Success – The Difference between Examination and Competition
DESCRIPTION:Preparing Your Students for Success – The Difference between Examination and Competition \n  \nMusic is versatile and abstract. This suggests that good playing involves more than just talent and tenacity. Even when music students put in a lot of hard work and have good talents\, judges may not be impressed. Although we are all aware that competitions and exams have different requirements\, students are often guided on technicalities rather than their psychological preparedness to ace these two significant events. In this workshop\, Dr. Poom will go through the important points to be aware of when practising the piano for an exam or to win a competition. \n  \nDr Poom Prommachart\, received his Bachelor of Music\, Master of Music\, and Artist Diploma at the Royal College of Music in London on a full scholarship sponsored by the late Princess of Thailand. He went on to obtain the most prestigious Tagore Gold Medal which was handed to him by His Majesty King Charles III\, King of the United Kingdom. \n  \nIn 2022\, Dr Poom was awarded the ‘Rector’s List of Honour for the Most Exceptional Graduates’ from the University of Montreal’s Doctor of Music programme. He is currently a Steinway Artist\, an Assistant Professor at the University College Fairview and the Brand Ambassador of Kaimirra Tutan\, a rare gemstones jewellery brand. \n  \nDr Poom is currently residing in Malaysia but actively flies to different parts of the world for performance\, collaborations and adjudications. \nGET TICKETS HERE

DESCRIPTION:GET TICKET\nA presentation focusing on developing firmer fingers alongside a rich sonority\, coupled with a relaxed upper torso.   \nThis presentation will start by focusing on simple five-finger exercises which can be implemented into piano lessons in order to develop firmer fingers coupled with a loose flexible upper torso. Discussion and demonstration will include the use of arm-weight for the introduction of a rich\, full sonority\, and how to teach it\, as well as the importance of developing a relaxed octave position in order to play octaves and chords more effectively. \n\n\n\nMelanie Spanswick Biography \nMelanie Spanswick (1969 – ) is a British pianist\, author\, teacher\, adjudicator\, and composer. SUMMARY:Alexandra Frost Presentation (Online)
DESCRIPTION:GET TICKET\nTo what extent is performance viewed by music students as a threat or a challenge? How to support optimal performance\, mental health and wellbeing in music students. \nAs we have learned through many years of neuroscience research\, musical performance\, as a multi sensory task\, is one of the most complex challenges we can possibly face being aptly described by Dr Anita Collins as the “brain equivalent of a full body workout”. Given this reality\, it is hardly surprising that the process of learning music\, sustaining motivation and deliberate practice and performing under scrutiny may be incredibly challenging for many students. What we see with students with certain characteristics such as perfectionism\, high trait anxiety and challenges with focusing attention and sustaining motivation for practice is that performance often becomes more associated with threat and danger rather than a sense of challenge\, success or enjoyment. This paper and the subsequent workshops will explore practical ways of working psychologically to support student’s specific performance goals and ultimately maintain the joy of music. In the workshops Alexandra will work directly with students performing by supporting them with applying skills in the moment such as accepting\, befriending and reframing “anxiety” and the application of psychological flexibility and mindfulness skills. We will also explore the importance of finding passion\, joy and the “rage to master” their craft\, dealing with task irrelevant thoughts\, in addition to developing specific habits and the mental toughness needed to sustain mental health\, wellbeing and optimal performance. \nAlexandra Frost BA(Hons)MPsych(Clinical) \nClinical/Performance Psychologist – Attuned Psychology \nAlexandra Frost\, Director/ Clinical and Performance Psychologist of Attuned Psychology\, an established private Psychology practice in North Adelaide\, brings a unique perspective to the field of optimal performance\, mental health and wellbeing for performers having completed successful Masters research into the management of musical performance anxiety in 1997. She has since worked with musicians at all levels both individually and in workshops for almost 25 years drawing on her experience as a performer\, research and extensive clinical experience. \n  \nThis Presentation is a part of 2022 MTASA Summer Conference \nPresentation (Webinar) Sep 5th 7:30pm-8:30 pm \nMasterclass 1 (Webinar) Sep 12th 7:30pm-8:30 pm \nMasterclass 2 (Webinar) Sep 19th 7:30pm-8:30 pm

SUMMARY:Webinar: Teaching Music in an Age of Uncertainty
DESCRIPTION:Teaching Music in the Age of Covid \nThe stress felt by the world from bushfires\, pestilence and economic recession touches us all with uncertainty and anxiety. We each express this in our own way\, with some people becoming withdrawn and worried while others are irritable\, argumentative\, and uncooperative. Children are also affected and the more distressed the adults around them are\, the more reactive they will be. \nAs a key person in a child’s life a teacher is in an unique position to either exacerbate the anxiety the child is feeling or provide a productive space of relative calm and safety. This presentation by clinical psychologist and family therapist Catherine Sanders and MTSA committee member and violin/viola teacher Wendy Heiligenberg will provide a conceptual framework to support teachers to work with their students while taking care of themselves. It will discuss practical strategies and provide opportunity for questions.
